Visste du at F-111 Aardvark (jordsvin) var forgjengeren til F-15 Strike Eagle? Med opptil 14 tonns bombelast, ekstreme lavtflygingsegenskaper og høy hastighet var den en formidabel knyttneve i kald krig-scenariet.

 

Den første flyvningen fant sted i 1964, og flyet var sist operativt i det australske flyvåpenet, frem til 2010. I USA ble den i 1998 erstattet av F-15 Strike Eagle, og US Navy valgte i 1968 å satse på F-14 Tomcat i stedet for F-111.

Flyet er særlig kjent for «dump and ignite«-afterburneren, som har vært et spektakulært og populært fotoobjekt gjennom hele levetiden.
